About Gorantla

Gorantla is a prominent town in the southern part of Anantapur District in Andhra Pradesh. Also known as Goranda, it is around 82 km south of Anantapur and 25 kms south east of Penukonda.

About Madhavaraya Temple

Another important and historical temple found in Gorantla is the temple of Madhavaraya, a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

This temple consists of a simple arrangement of a plain vimana and a manadapa.This double unit is approached through a second open mandapa with seating on three sides.

The central columns on the periphery have crouching lion-like images called as “Yalis”.Ceiling panels in both madapas are conceived with rotated squares and petal-like motifs in the corners.An unfinished gateway in the form of gopuram stands to the east.

History

This temple of Madhavaraya Temple erected in 1354 by a local chief of the saluva family.

A small town on east bank of Chitravti River. Early vijayanagar style temple build @1350 by a local chief. Deity is Madhavaraya.
